Herpesviruses (HSV1, HSV2, VZV, EBV, CMV, HHV-6, HHV-7, HHV-8) – Detection / Quantification
This is a large family of DNA viruses with many genera and over 150 species. In humans, 8 herpesviruses have been identified.
A characteristic feature of all herpesviruses is that after the initial infection resolves, they do not leave (or get eradicated) from the human body. Instead, they remain in a latent state, which can later reactivate and cause recurrent disease.
The currently known strains are:
- Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1)
- Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2)
- Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV)
- Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV / HHV-4)
- Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
- Human Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6)
- Human Herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7)
- Kaposi’s Sarcoma-associated Herpesvirus (HHV-8)
